In this episode, Pipe Major Matt MacIsaac of the St. Andrew's College Association Pipe Band performs the beautiful tunes “Farewell My Love,” “Lady in the Bottle,” and “House on the Hill” on a rare and exceptional set of (c.1830) Donald MacDonald bagpipes. These rare bagpipes, crafted from Cocuswood (Jamaican Ebony) and marine ivory (walrus tusk), represent the pinnacle of 19th-century bagpipe craftsmanship. With only a few examples of Donald MacDonald’s work remaining today, finding and playing these historic pipes is a truly unique experience—akin to discovering a unicorn. Donald MacDonald (1767–1840) is celebrated as one of the greatest Scottish bagpipe makers. Between 1806 and 1840, he created the “Edinburgh-style” bagpipe, setting a standard for quality and tone that continues to inspire pipers and makers alike.
