Driver: San Francisco for the Nintendo Wii takes the Driver franchise back to its roots. Kind of. OK, it's got motion controls, and neat DS connectivity, but the gameplay is all about driving, no missions on foot. This game is not a lackluster port from the PS3/360 versions. Instead, Ubisoft has created a unique experience just for the Wii. There's no fancy-pants "shifting" from car to car. Here, you just drive the car that you brought to the dance. Or whatever. There aren't any intricate missions here, just drive to that place, smash up that guy, follow that other guy, smash other stuff, and so on. OK, it's more elaborate than that, but really, this is kind of a throwback game with old-school (if late 90s is old-school for you) action. The graphics are good, though there's a little pop-up, and sometimes shadows will be filled in late. But that's an acceptable trade-off for a framerate that generally holds up well except in the most busy of car chases. The story is told through graphic-novel style cutscenes, and in-game scenes with a 70s-style gritty film look. But the game isn't really gritty at all. I'm not sure this game captures the cool funky vibe of the original Driver game, but that is really a small issue, and doesn't affect the fun gameplay! And the game is fun, at least for me! I did wonder whether to get this version, or the 360 edition, and I'm glad I went with the Wii version. I wanted old-school fun action, and that's what I got! I guess the only problem I have with the gameplay is that as you go along and upgrade your car and weapon abilities, you really become powerful, probably too powerful. This doesn't quite have the challenge of the original Driver, but there were a couple missions that drove me a little nuts and took several tries to complete. And oh crap, I just realized I forgot to mention this in the video. Darn it. Oh well. Anyway, when you finish a mission, it is still available to replay to try to get the gold medal if you didn't the first time! Same thing goes for the side missions. So even when you finish the story, assuming you didn't get gold on everything, there's still a lot of replay value trying to get gold! And don't forget the local multiplayer! Racing, cops and robbers, etc....there's not a ton of modes, but they are pretty cool if you can get some people to play Wii! Wheeee! OK, that's enough. ----- ----- This video is a review of the game Driver: San Francisco, and contains gameplay with consistent commentary. It is presented for informational and educational purposes and is protected under fair use law. Oh, and all footage was played by me on real hardware with a real and legitimate copy of the game. Whoo-hoo! The theme song for this video was created solely by me, Nice and Games and contains no copyrighted material from other sources. I mean really, who else would want to make something so terrible? No one, that's who.
