In his report, which was corroborated by at least one other officer, University of Cincinnati officer Ray Tensing claimed he was dragged by Dubose’s vehicle, a claim the video footage contradicts. In his official statement, Tensing claimed he was dragged and almost run over by Dubose’s Honda Accord after he pulled the 43-year-old over for not displaying a front license plate. Eric Weibel, another officer who arrived shortly after the shooting, told investigators Tensing’s uniform had marks on it consistent with being dragged over a rough surface. Hamilton County prosecutor Joe Deters, however, said that the video shows Tensing was not dragged, but rather fell backwards after shooting Dubose, who was struck in the head and died almost instantly. The prosecutor said there was no justification for deadly force in this case and Tensing has been charged with murder and voluntary manslaughter. Tensing’s lawyer, Stew Matthews, said other video of the incident may show a different story. Prosecutor Deters, however, told the New York Times his office has no doubt that Dubose’s death was a murder.
