SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Saturday, February 21, 2026 — Santa Monica police officers arrested a man Saturday afternoon following a reported assault near Lifeguard Tower 16 on Santa Monica Beach. According to preliminary observations at the scene, Los Angeles County lifeguards requested police assistance after a lifeguard on duty heard loud yelling and a commotion coming from the sand near the shoreline. The lifeguard did not witness the altercation itself. According to information provided at the scene, a woman reported she had been assaulted after the disturbance. The lifeguard separated the parties and allowed the woman to take refuge inside the lifeguard station while law enforcement was contacted. Responding officers met lifeguards near the boardwalk and were transported across the sand on the back of a lifeguard rescue vehicle to Tower 16, where the suspect remained at the scene. Officers approached the suspect and spoke with him briefly before placing him in handcuffs pending further investigation. Police then interviewed the woman inside the lifeguard tower as well as an additional witness nearby. After providing a statement, the woman left the area on foot along the beach. Following the on-scene investigation, officers escorted the suspect in handcuffs across the sand to a patrol vehicle staged on the boardwalk. He was taken into custody without further incident. Based on preliminary information gathered at the scene, the suspect was arrested on suspicion of felony battery. Formal charges, if any, will be determined by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. The beach remained open during the response, and no additional injuries were reported. Santa Monica Closeup continues to document public safety activity and law enforcement response across the city’s beaches and public spaces. ✅ 𝗨𝗣𝗗𝗔𝗧𝗘: According to the Santa Monica Police Department daily arrest log, the suspect was booked on the following charges: • 220(a)(1) — Assault with intent to commit rape • 261(a)(2) — Rape against a person’s will by force or fear • 11364(a) — Possession of controlled substance paraphernalia The charges listed in the police log reflect allegations and do not constitute proof of guilt.
