A lot of liposuction surgeons will advertise “tumescent” liposuction, but what does that mean? Dr. Bergeron, Founder and Medical Director of explains tumescent liposuction and walks through the process for creating tumescent fluid. Tumescent fluid allows for a safer procedure with less bleeding and bruising. It also enabled the possibility of liposuction under local anesthesia rather than general anesthesia. Because of this it’s often confused with lipo under local anesthesia. The truth is every liposuction case performed these days is tumescent liposuction, whether that’s with general anesthesia or local anesthesia, SmartLipo or Vaser. There are some small differences in the concentration used in each that we’ll walk over in the video. Here at Houston Lipo Center, tumescent fluid is composed of lidocaine, epinephrine, and sodium bicarbonate in a saline solution. This mixture is infiltrated into the surgical area through tiny circular incisions prior to suctioning out the fat from the area. This ensures less bleeding and bruising and numbs the entire surgical area prior to the procedure.
