The closures affect pupils at 37 schools across Northumberland and Cumberland in northern England, more than 40 schools in Northern Ireland and more than 30 in north Wales. Schools and nurseries across Scotland will be closed, except in five council areas. ScotRail has suspended all Friday services across Scotland, and the West Coast and East Coast main lines have been closed north of Preston and Newcastle respectively. Network Rail warned that other lines may be closed at short notice owing to the storm and re-issued its plea for trampolines and garden furniture to be tied down during high winds to prevent them being blown across the tracks. National Rail has urged passengers not to travel across parts of northern England.
