Is Cholula Worth Visiting? We took a day trip from Puebla to see why this Pueblo Magico is so popular. Exploring Cholula, Mexico to answer the question: Is this historic town worth a day trip from Puebla? We discover traditional Mexican cuisine, visit local markets, and climb the famous pyramid topped with a church. Located just 30 minutes from Puebla city, Cholula offers a more relaxed atmosphere while serving authentic Mexican dishes. We try mole de panza (cow stomach in mole sauce) and adobo beef at a local market, sample cecina (traditional salt-dried beef) served in large tacos with avocado and cactus, and enjoy excellent pastries at a hidden Italian cafe called Amalia. The highlight of our visit is climbing the Great Pyramid of Cholula, considered the largest pyramid in the world by total mass. Built over 1000 years by various cultures including the Olmecs and Cholutecas, this ancient site dates back to 800-200 BC. The Spanish later built the Church of Our Lady of Remedies on top to suppress indigenous beliefs. Despite searching for unique Choluteca cuisine, most dishes were variations of Poblano classics. However, the town's relaxed vibe, friendly locals, beautiful colonial architecture around the zocalo, and rich pre-Hispanic history make it a worthwhile destination. Food highlights include traditional cazuelas (stewed meat in sauce), fresh tortillas, and local market dining for around 80 pesos per meal. The pyramid complex costs 100 pesos for non-Mexican visitors, though Spanish students from Puebla get free entry.
