Her adult fiction, published by Virago, can be described as reworked myths reflecting a universal theme of modern relevance. She thoroughly enjoys writing for children because its demand for simplicity, clarity and brevity hones the craft. She likewise relishes the craftsmanship that goes into creating a screenplay and her adaptation of Anita Desai’s Booker-nominated In Custody for Merchant Ivory Productions won the President of India gold medal and received an Oscar nomination. Currently she is working on an historical screenplay for Bend It Films and completing a series of mythology books for children. In her ‘other life’, she practises as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist specialising in transcultural work. Shahrukh was born in Pakistan and lives in London with her husband, two children and a middle-aged chihuahua. „Rubies for a Dog‟ is a story with a message advocating women empowerment. It is inspired by „The Tale of Azad Bakht‟ which was penned in 1803. Husain‟s is a story with a blunt and bold narrative.
