Sister of deceased man from Nolan series says presenter ‘took advantage of him for entertainment'

A sister of a now deceased North Belfast man says she believes Stephen Nolan ‘took advantage’ of her brother 'for entertainment' during a recent BBC series. Kieran McGrandles featured on Nolan’s Jailed: Inside Maghaberry Prison which was first broadcast on BBC last week. Kieran had more than 100 convictions for crimes such as assault on police which he says were down to his addiction to drugs such as Pregabalin. The Ardoyne man died of a suspected drug overdose in May following the filming of the series last year. During an interview with Nolan, Kieran said he was going to shoot a police officer, sex offender or a doctor dead because he didn’t get the help he needed for drug addiction and mental health issues. It was reported following the programme that the McGrandles family was not told in advance of the broadcast that he would speak about sexual abuse he was subjected to as a child, with only Kieran’s immediate family knowing about the abuse beforehand. Speaking to Belfast Live, Kieran’s younger sister Rachel said it is her belief that he was under the influence of unprescribed medication and that he was ‘taken advantage of’ by Nolan.
