Purity culture is a movement predominantly seen in the evangelical branch of Christianity that focuses on the purity status of young, unmarried women. Within her research on the topic, Jessica Nibbelink dives into the lived experiences and attitudes women hold towards purity culture on a Christian campus. This speech touches on the findings of that research, but also about the solidarity that can be found when these conversations are started. Jessica is a Psychology and Sociology student at Northwestern College. Through her time at Northwestern, she has participated and lead many research opportunities both in Psychology and Sociology, mainly focusing on purity culture and rape culture. She has also been a part of directed research labs looking into study skills, and pursued research in gender bias. She has been able to present at many conferences, including Celebration of Research, Siouxland Undergraduate Social Science Research Conference, and at the Midwest Sociological Society. Nibbelink is currently in her senior year and plans to continue to pursue research. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
