The first part of the Narrows is a paved trail called the Riverside walk. It is 1.9 miles round trip and an easy hike on dry pavement. To hike the full hike through Wall Street and back plan a full 4-5 hours and reserve the whole day. Don’t forget to look up during your hike. Its really important to pay attention to your footing and each step. Pause often and take in your surroundings. Every turn is a new wonderful view. You’ll amaze at the canyon walls and the vegetation attached precariously on the walls. The rest of the hike is mainly in the water, however there are dry spots, depending on the water flow, where you can grab a snack, adjust clothing, or take a rest. you should research the water flow the day and season of your hike. For context, when we hiked, the water flow was 30 cubic feet per second. As you can see here the water was reasonable and maybe on the low side which was great for us. Our 9 year old daughter and older boys hiked very well in the water, however any additional volume would have made it difficult and we would have hiked fewer miles. The Narrows hike can be as long as you would like. The river walk is a great paved hike to show you the start of the Narrows and show you a variety of plants and trees. As you plan for the Narrows you should consider the common questions like Do I need to rent special gear to hike the Narrows? The answer is not really. Depending on how long you want to hike will determine how well you should plan your gear. If you just want to hike in a little and turn around you can do it in slides and flip flops. We saw many people wading in the river closer to the entrance having a great time. Vital to success in the narrows are neoprene socks, good hiking shoes, and a wood hiking pole that is as tall as you are. You can rent all of these items from various outfitters in the area. Depending on the weather you can save some money by not renting from the outfitters. We hiked in the Summer on a 90 degree day although when we started it was 70 degrees. There are a lot of beautiful items to explore while hiking the narrows. Take in all of the vegetation. Zion is home to around 900 different plant types. Waterfalls exist on the canyon walls. Some are more visible than others. Any time of day the sun will cast shadows that provide many colors on the canyon and in the water. The geology is beautiful, too.
