The eastern neighbor to Reno - Fallon, Nevada spawned during the California Gold Rush as travelers stopped along the Carson River in the 40-Mile Desert, one of the most dangerous expanses of the Emigrant Trail. However, Fallon really started booming once the Newland Project began in 1903, providing irrigation to the town of Fallon from the Truckee River and Carson River. Later in the 1920s, Fallon became home to the “Heart O’ Gold” cantaloupe, where they were grown and distributed all over the U.S. This inspired the annual Fallon Cantaloupe Festival.
