Welcome back to The Collections Corner with Madison Howard, where we explore the unique and diverse artifacts that bring the Victorian era in Nova Scotia to life. Each episode highlights a carefully preserved piece of history, revealing the stories behind these treasured objects. In this episode, we spotlight one of the more inventive—and adorable—pieces in the Sherbrooke Village collection: a canine-operated butter churn. Based on an original patent by George Parker of Stewiacke, this churn was designed to harness a dog’s energy to do the hard work of making butter. On display at the General Store in Sherbrooke Village, the churn includes the original design and patent documentation, offering a glimpse into the creative, resourceful spirit of rural life in the late 19th century. Proof that in the Victorian era, even man's best friend had a job to do.
