Matter is defined as anything that has mass, takes up space, and can be perceived by our senses. It is made up of very small particles called atoms, molecules, or ions that are in constant motion. These particles have tiny spaces between them called inter-particle spaces and are held together by a force called inter-particle attraction. When matter is heated, these particles gain energy and move faster, which often increases the space between them. There are three main states of matter, which are solids, liquids, and gases. In a solid, the particles are packed very tightly with strong attraction, giving the solid a definite shape and volume. Liquids have particles that are further apart with weaker attraction, allowing them to flow and take the shape of their container while keeping a fixed volume. Gases have particles with the most space between them and very little attraction, meaning they have no definite shape or volume and can be compressed easily. Matter can change from one state to another by changing the temperature or pressure, a process known as the interconversion of matter. This includes melting, boiling, and freezing, as well as sublimation, where a solid turns directly into a gas. Regardless of these changes, the law of conservation of mass states that matter is never created or destroyed. This means that the total mass of the substances involved stays exactly the same, even when they change form. #dohrao #dohraoicseclassh8 #icseclass8 #icse #icseclass8chemistry #dohraoicseclass8chemistry #chemistry
