1955 brings Rock Music's first number one hit. Rhythm and Blues or R&B music is crossing over to the Popular Music Charts in a big way. Black R&B artists Little Richard, Fats Domino, The Penguins, Chuck Berry and The Platters score significant US Pop hits in 1955. White artists such as Pat Boone, The Crewcuts, Georgia Gibbs and others find success covering R&B songs with a smooth pop sound and turning them into pop hits. By the late fifties Rock and Roll has moved beyond it's southern and urban blues roots becoming the dominant musical style enjoyed by both black and white teens, breaking down racial segregation between the black R&B charts and white Pop music in the US.
