George Blackmore plays the Regal/Odeon Marble Arch Christie organ. This organ as the biggest cinema /theatre organ in Europe the Cinema was built in 1928 and the firm of William Hill, Norman & Beard, LTD were the builders of this fine Christie Unit organs Having a large 4 manual console and some 36 ranks of pipework plus a full 31 note Carillon in a separate chamber. Here George Blackmore plays the organ some weeks before it was removed and the cinema was demolished in March 1964. This is the last recording the Christie Carillon can be heard the action had burnt out some 25 years prior to this but George Blackmore enlisted the help of an number of friends Ernest Hart and Les Rawle who rang the bells by hand on this recording so they could be heard one last time. George Blackmore was a fine organist having started his cinema organ career at the age of 16 at the Majestic, cinema Rochester. A very fine organist indeed in my view. I was lucky enough to see him play live on several organs later on in his long musical career and always gave a wonderful musical performance and always had time to talk about organs and how to play them.
