(23 Aug 2023) ASSOCIATED PRESS Los Angeles - 22 August 2023 1. Various shots strikers attending rally outside Disney studio lot in Burbank, California ASSOCIATED PRESS London - 18 August 2023 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Gatiss, writer/director/actor: "Sympathy strikes, I'm not sure it would do any good. I mean, it's about showing solidarity. But one thing it's definitely exposed, of course, is how dependent we are on huge American productions, which, when the wind is blowing in your favor, is amazing. Suddenly everyone's strung out. And I mean, having said that, of course they are right and I think we've got to be very, very clear about that. I made a comparison the other day. It's like the whole AI thing and all that image capture and everything, it's sort of like someone saying, 'Oh, you know, the industrial revolution? You cool with that?' and then moving on and everyone's going, 'Sorry, what?' It's a huge mare's nest of new stuff and they're trying to just paper over it very quickly. So we've got to show complete solidarity but equally, it's scary because it's, I don't think it's going to end any time soon." 3. Various shots Anton Tweedale speaking to reporter 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Anton Tweedale, actor: "I think it would be great to do something in solidarity but the agreements are different. But I do think that Equity could be making moves to make sure that we keep in pace with any agreements that are potentially reached on in America. I think that is something that we should be doing, definitely." 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Sara Crowe, actor: "I certainly think there needs to be change. I think there's still exploitation and for too long I think we've just accepted it because we've come to expect nothing better and that's not a good place to be. And I respect the strikes, the SAG strikes in America, and I think we should be doing something similar here and treating people properly and respectfully." ASSOCIATED PRESS Archive: Burbank, Calif. - 18 August 2023 6. Various shots picketers in front of the Warner Bros. studio lot ASSOCIATED PRESS London - 18 August 2023 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Anton Tweedale, actor - on A.I. "It terrifies me, absolutely terrifies me. I mean, I count myself lucky in a way that I primarily work in theatre so it's not something that so far seems to be affected by that. But yeah, the idea that you can, they wanted to scan an actor and use their likeness in perpetuity for a day fee, it's outrageous, it really is." 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Gatiss, writer/director/actor, and Ian Hallard, writer/actor: Gatiss: "You know what I heard the other day, which genuinely chilled me? It was a radio ad for Five Guys - a radio ad for a burger chain - and it was clearly an AI voiceover. It was terrible, but they'd done it and you could tell - it was like listening to something announcing the stops on the train. And I thought, well, they're just doing it. They've got some guy to, you know, read the phone book and now they've chosen what he says. And it was like..." Hallard: "And the the technology will only get better, won't it, so in a few years you won't have that." Gatiss: "Or as you said, maybe it was just a terrible actor!" 9. SOUNDBITE (English) Anton Tweedale, actor: "There was a series recently where they've used A.I. to create the title sequence, so it's coming up in films and TV. It's not just actors being affected - it's writers, it's graphic designers. And it's, yeah, it makes you really think about what is art and what are we doing it for otherwise, if you're just going to make a machine do it?"
