The average person produces 5 pounds of trash everyday. What happens to our trash? Millions of tons of waste are taken to landfills. All this waste has a terrible impact on the environment. Garbage is one of the biggest problems in the world. Fortunately, there is something we can do! When you recycle items you are helping reduce garbage in the landfill. Recycling helps save natural resources. There are many different options for recycling. Not all trash is garbage. Paper, plastic and metal materials can all be turned into new goods instead of being thrown out. Food scraps, plant scraps and other organic materials can be used to make compost. Recycling dead plant or organic material is called composting. What is composting? When leaves fall to the ground, they break down and decay. They become the nutrients for the soil. The leaves become compost. Compost is decaying plant materials. Composting is a natural process of decomposition and recycling of organic material (such as leaves, grass, fruit and vegetable scraps) into a rich soil known as compost. Compost decreases landfill waste, thus reducing a harmful greenhouse gases called methane gas. What can you compost? What to compost is as simple as anything made from organic material, but not all organic material is safe for most home compost piles. The following materials are safe for compost pile: grass clippings, plant leaves, vegetable food scraps like lettuce, potato peels, banana peels, avocado skins and others, coffee grounds printer paper disease-free yard waste, corrugated cardboard and boxes, vegetarian animal manure like cows, horses and others black and white newspaper, wood shavings or sawdust. Composting is nature’s way of recycling old plants to make new plants. Composting keeps plant waste out of landfills.
