This video presents Sidama, the City of Hawassa (ሀዋሳ) & Its Surrounding Environment in Ethiopia. The Video film was recorded on 09 September 2019 when I travelled from Wolaita (Soddo) to Sidama Hawassa via Bedessa Valley. BACK GROUND TO THE CITY OF HAWASSA Hawassa, one of the fastest growing Cities in Ethiopia is 279.4 KM away South from the Capital City of Ethiopia (Addis Ababa). According to hawassaonline.com the first settlers in the area are the Arsi Oromo and Sidama Pastorialists who were attracted by Lake Awassa water. In 1950th (during the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie) Ethiopian Defense Camps, Government Administrative Offices, Schools, Health Centers, Processing industries and other development infrastructures have been built and developed the area during that Imperial time. When Emperor Haile Selassie allowed Citizens and Foreigners to own land and invest in the then small Town of Hawassa, modern buildings started to flourish in the refreshing and beautiful areas around the lake. One of these historic buildings is “Villa Alpha” which has been constructed by the Honorable Maitre Artist Laureate Afework Tekle. In 1975 Emperor Haile Selassie laid down the foundation stone for the promotion of Hawassa as the Capital City of Sidamo at the current Meskal Square and its remarkable Master Plan was accomplished by its then progressive Governors such as Dejazmach Girmame Niway. Consequently this rapidly growing Town has become the Capital City of the Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples Regional State. THE AFRICAN GREAT RIFT VALLEY The Great Rift Valley is about 6,000 kilometres in total length, which runs from the Beqaa Valley in Lebanon (Asia) to Mozambique in Southeast Africa. Almost half of this Rift valley is found within Ethiopia. Scientists believe that the Great Rift Valley will split apart to form a new Ocean basin which consequently divide Africa and Ethiopia into two big chunks of lands. During my 8 Years research work in the Southern part of Ethiopia I used to travel from Matahara to Borana to study crop production in the area and observed (witnessed) cracks on the lowest points of the Rift Valley land which may indicate the gradual changes in the environment due to the fragility of the Rift Valley land. This amazing video was recorded during my recent journey in 2019 form Addis Ababa to Konso (Beqawule) and you will see the following: The Great Rift Valley between Sidama and Wolaita. Please note the cracks of the area land and the on going slow process to form a new Ocean basin. Amazing transportation using MotorBikes Enset plants in Homesteads of rural Houses and other farm lands The Tabor hill The City of Hawassa Lake Hawassa is a small closed Lake at the edge of the City of Hawassa which is vulnerable for pollution because of the rapid growth of the population in the City and the the drainage systems River Tiqur Wuha (where I carried out diagnostic studies in 1997) Arsi Negele Lake Langano Lake Ziway Farmlands and Acacia Trees in the Rift Valley and the Outskirt of Addis Ababa For your Further information please subscribe, comment and share or Visit www.iwooket.org/ Thank you for visiting Kefale Alemu.
