Violence and tension have gripped the northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya over the past few days, particularly in the districts of West Garo Hills and East Garo Hills. The unrest began amid growing controversy surrounding the upcoming elections of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), a powerful local body that functions under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution and plays a crucial role in protecting tribal land, administration, and resources in the region. The conflict erupted after disagreements over whether only candidates with Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificates should be allowed to contest the GHADC elections. Several tribal organizations demanded strict eligibility rules to safeguard indigenous representation, while some non-tribal groups argued that long-term residents should also have the right to participate in the democratic process. The situation escalated when protests broke out during the nomination process in areas like Tura and Chibinang. Clashes between protesters and supporters of a candidate quickly turned violent. Police used tear gas, lathi charge, and eventually opened fire when the situation spiraled out of control, resulting in the deaths of two people and several injuries. Following the violence, authorities imposed curfew, suspended internet services, and deployed security forces while the army conducted flag marches to restore order.
