On April 19, 2011, Megan and I flew to the Big Island of Hawaii for a weekend of adventure. We spent a morning and afternoon kayaking in Kealakekua Bay, the site where the explorer Captain Cook died in 1779. We had heard that dolphins frequented the bay and were hoping to see some. In the late afternoon as we were returning to shore, we saw our first group of dolphins...and then more..and more..all in all we estimated there to be 25 or more dolphins, including cute baby dolphins! We were treated to a 20 minute show by the dolphins that was mesmerizing and unforgettable. They were jumping and flying through the air, spinning, splashing their fins, and swimming as close as10' from us to get a curious look. At times they came so close we could almost touch them! Here are some of the highlights. You'll hear me paddling, but pay close attention and you'll hair the dolphins breathing out through their blow holes as they surface. Keep your eyes open, you never know what those dolphins will be up to! :)
