The island itself on which the fortress is built is called Lastavica. During WWII, it was used as a prison, holding many captives under harsh conditions. Today, this once-feared outpost has been reborn as a luxury retreat — while still honouring its past with a memorial gallery that is open to the public. 📜🕊️ 🌊 Hotel or Day Visit? You don’t need to be a hotel guest to experience Mamula Island. Non-guests can book day visits for its restaurants, bars, spa, or memorial gallery. However, access to the private pools, suites, and guest-only areas is reserved for overnight guests of the Mamula Island Hotel (by Banyan Tree). From above, the circular fortress looks like a stone crown rising from the Adriatic, surrounded by turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs.
