Huw explains the science behind some of the geological features you get on an active volcano like Mt Etna. In this episode the team find a lava tunnel. The lava flows down channels like a stream (especially near the source of the lava). The top crusts over as it cools and also, to a lesser extent, the bottom and sides where it chills against existing rocks. The solid crust insulates the lava beneath which stays liquid longer. If the tube reaches more level ground the lava tends to fan out and a crust forms until the lava breaks through a weak point. This can concentrate flow between the original tube and the new break out and form another tube.
