The Re:Think Essay Competition is dedicated to nurturing critical thinking and encouraging the exploration of a wide array of thought-provoking and, at times, controversial topics. In 2024, Re:Think underscores the pivotal role that discourse, debate, and critical analysis play in addressing complex societal challenges. This year, CCIR received over 4,200 submissions from students representing more than 50 countries. From these entries, our distinguished jury panel—comprising scholars from both sides of the Atlantic—selected approximately 350 students for Honourable Mention, with 33 ultimately being recognised as award winners. In this video, we interview Rainier Liu, a Silver Award recipient from Knox Grammar School in Sydney, New South Wales. His award-winning essay, titled "Why has Religion Remained a Force in a Secular World?," delves into the surprising resurgence of religion in contemporary times, despite the earlier prevailing notion that secularism would inevitably triumph. The essay explores the paradoxical relationship between religion and secularism, how religion has been woven into capitalist ideologies, and how opposition to capitalism has, in turn, spurred greater religiosity.
