The bulk metal foil resistors are used on the Mars rovers and Hubbell telescope for reasons other than sound, they are the only resistors that could stand the temperature variations of sometimes hundreds of degrees and still hold extremely consistent values, and return to those values time and time again after many temperature cycles.
