This isn’t just any stall – it’s Chuan Kee Char Kway Teow, a humble hawker gem run by a 78-year-old uncle, serving up plates of wok hei magic at just $3.00! Located inside Whampoa Makan Place, Chuan Kee is a throwback to Singapore’s early hawker culture. The story of this stall goes back decades, beginning with the current owner's father, who started as a pushcart hawker in the 1960s. Back then, mobile food carts roamed the streets of Whampoa and Balestier, offering affordable meals to working-class families. One of the staple dishes? It was built in the early 1970s as part of Singapore’s major hawker centre development plan, which aimed to move street hawkers into clean, regulated environments. The area takes its name from Hoo Ah Kay, better known as Whampoa, a respected Chinese businessman and diplomat in 19th-century Singapore. His legacy lives on not just in name, but in the spirit of the community that still thrives here. Whampoa Makan Place is split into two main blocks – Block 91 for the wet market and morning food, and Block 90 for the cooked food stalls, popular during lunch and dinner. It’s well-loved for its affordable eats, long-time hawkers, and authentic local flavors. Many stalls here, like Chuan Kee, are run by second or third-generation hawkers who’ve remained loyal to the original recipes.
