The Compaq iPaq PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) was a huge hit back in 2002 when Pocket PC's were all the rage! Originally it cost $649 US (equivalent to $1200 today). I found mine in the closet and decided to see what it could do! Lots of software is still available at MobyWare and Archive. Using ActiveSync software installed on a WinXP Virtual Machine (on my Ubuntu laptop) I was able to load up some apps (media player, calculators, a bouncy ball game) while connected to it's USB/serial dock. The era of Pocket PC's died out almost as quickly as their batteries, and by 2010 their functionality was already being replaced by Android/iPhone smartphones (which can now do more for under $100). Replacing the battery on this will be a pain but can be done (using a similar-sized LiPo with the BMS board scavenged from the original battery). Thanks for watching this historical look at mobile computing of the past! NOTE: I had to blur out some parts of my video as it matched YouTube copyright (hopefully it makes it through after the blur).
