South-African Hi-NRG band created by producers Paul Crossley and Terry Owen in 1985, when they were told by record executives that they were not willing to further push “Shiraz”, the band they were working with at that time, due to the lead singer's heavy South African accent. They immediately started looking for a new voice, and one night found Cindy Dickenson performing on stage at the famous Johannesburg night-club, Bella Napoli. “People Like Us” soon recorded several songs in the studio, and released their first single "Midnight Lover" under the watchful eye of music executive Hilton Rosenthal, who would later produce albums like 'Graceland' for Paul Simon, and who was also the manager for South African outfits Juluka and Savuka. In 1987 they released "Deliverance” which would become very popular in the clubs of Europe, but also all over the world where Hi-NRG and Euro disco songs were still the favourite music styles. Generally no one realised that “People Like Us” was a South African outfit and expected them to be from the UK, due to the record company “Passion” who distributed their music. Their debut album, “Deliverance”, was released in 1987, and soon afterwards a tour of the UK was launched. Disaster struck, however, when Paul Crossley fell gravely ill with Aids (and died on 6 August 1989). With Paul Crossley out of the picture, the situation between band members soured and Cindy Dickenson decided not to be involved with future albums. Following this, Angie Gold, who was known for her hit "Eat You Up", became the new voice of “People Like Us” and recorded several songs, including "Resurrection" and "Two To Tango". The band’s later work, however, could not live up to the original success of "Deliverance" and they finally broke up in 1988. Members: Cindy Dickenson (replaced by Angie Gold) Paul Crossley Terry Owen Robin Hogarth Hilton Rosenthal Bobby Summerfield Peps Cotummaccio Grant Fisher This song is off the album "Deliverance", released in 1987. It was first released by another South African band, "Shiraz", in 1984.
