The Odyssey is one of the oldest and most influential epic poems in Western literature. Attributed to Homer and composed in ancient Greek around the 8th century BC, the poem stands at the foundation of the Western storytelling tradition. Set in the aftermath of the Trojan War, The Odyssey follows the long and perilous journey of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, as he struggles to return home after ten years of war. Along the way he encounters shipwrecks, monsters, witches, divine intervention, and the temptation of immortality itself. Meanwhile, in Ithaca, his wife Penelope and son Telemachus endure growing danger as ruthless suitors consume the household and plot for the throne. Blending adventure, myth, psychological depth, and reflections on loyalty, identity, and homecoming, The Odyssey has shaped countless stories for nearly three thousand years. Its influence can be seen in epic fantasy, modern novels, film, and every hero’s journey that follows. Though its origins lie in the oral tradition of ancient Greece, The Odyssey remains one of the most enduring explorations of what it means to wander, to suffer, and ultimately, to return home. Book 7 Summary: Guided invisibly by Athena, Odysseus enters the magnificent palace of the Phaeacians and falls at the knees of Queen Arete in formal supplication. The hall is stunned into silence as he begs for safe passage home, and Arete questions him about his identity and the clothing he wears. King Alcinous promises him hospitality and protection, and Odysseus is welcomed to stay among them until his story is told.
