My father, Ingo Titze, introduced our family to different diameter straws over 20 years ago, but at the time we did not understand why. He helped my understanding develop as I learned and examined the science behind straws used for vocalization (https://ncvs.org/why-straw/). He analyzed the resistance and pressure-flow characteristics in simulation studies of the voice (https://www.researchgate.net/publicat.... Further study with trusted colleagues and the unrehearsed straw video that was made with Julie Ostrem during a lunch break in 2009 ( • titze-straw.mp2 ) started something I use daily in my practice now. As I test and study straw methods, I continue to learn how to implement them more effectively for different individuals and patients. This video is a shorter updated introduction into how to use high resistance straw in water to meet increasing demands for conditioning and improve vocal fatigue and healing. We need not be resist resistance, as we often benefit from the change it creates, a passive stretch that allows tissues and muscles improve posture and efficiency. Thanks to the many trusted colleagues that continue this work. A recent study (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36357237) reviews resistance and pressure-flow characteristics further for clinical use.
