David Crosby, best known as a founding member of the Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, collaborated with the Grateful Dead in a lesser-known project called David & The Dorks in 1970. The band also included Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh, and Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead. A recording of the band's performance at The Matrix in San Francisco on December 15, 1970, was broadcast on KSAN 95 FM, and a few tracks from a rehearsal were also included. This recording was made several years before the more well-known Dylan & The Dead collaboration in 1987. Crosby, a founding member of the Byrds and later a member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, was friends with members of the Grateful Dead and frequently played with them. Crosby collaborated with the Dead on several songs, including "Cowboy Movie," which appeared on Crosby's debut solo album "If I Could Only Remember My Name" in 1971. The song featured Jerry Garcia on guitar and Phil Lesh on bass. Crosby also contributed to the Dead's albums "Aoxomoxoa" and "American Beauty," and the Dead backed Crosby on several tracks for his 1972 solo album "Graham Nash David Crosby." In addition to these studio collaborations, Crosby frequently joined the Dead on stage for live performances, including the famed Festival Express tour in Canada in 1970. He also contributed vocals to several of the Dead's live albums, including "Grateful Dead" (1971) and "Europe '72" (1972).
