Growing Up in Northumberland: The Kids Years. 1967-1979 This is the longest collection of clips from our family’s cine films, covering the years from infant school through to teens. I appear in the earlier footage but disappear around the teenage years (probably because I was an awkward teen who didn't want to be filmed!). My sister's journey continues through to about 16-17 years old. The films capture an ordinary working-class childhood in 1960s-70s Northumberland. Day trips to the countryside and coast, playing at home, family gatherings, school events - the everyday moments of life that Dad got the camera out for. It was my favourite of the three I made in late 2025-2026 (Babies, Toddlers, Kids). Got me thinking of how different the world felt then. Families like ours could afford more than is accessible to young ordinary families today. And yet, no foreign holidays, power cuts in the ‘70s, coal fire in the living room, and just a few streets away the pit (coal mine) closed down (Rising Sun Wallsend for anyone who wants to do a bit of research). Things you probably wouldn't see today: • Clambering about on the rocks at the top of a waterfall • Feeding the deer in a country park • Little kids riding bikes without a helmet More Memory Reels, Videos and Shorts, here: • Memory Reels #GrowingUp #Northumberland #NorthEast #1960s #1970s #CineFilm #FamilyArchive #WorkingClass #ChildhoodMemories #VintageFootage #SocialHistory Acknowledgements: Historical photograph. “The Polish Army in Britain, 1940–1947 (H 5493)” War Office official photographer, Lockeyear.Courtesy of Imperial War Museums (IWM).
