Life under occupation: Hanukkah in Hebron’s Old City, 12 December 2017

In 2012, the Israeli military built a fence along a-Salaimeh St. in Hebron’s Old City, dividing the street in two: The broad, paved section for Jews; the narrow, unpaved section for Palestinians. In May 2017, the military extended the fence, further restricting Palestinian movement in the neighborhood. A locked gate was placed at one end of the fence, to be opened at the exclusive discretion of the troops stationed at the nearby Bakery Checkpoint. It was near this checkpoint that settlers and soldiers celebrated the Jewish festival of Hanukkah on 12 December 2017. Some 40,000 Palestinians and 800 settlers live in Area H2 of Hebron. The Israeli military institutes a regime of separation there. It severely curtails Palestinians' movement and violates their rights, while safeguarding settlers' rights and allowing them to move freely. By implementing this separation policy, which led to the economic ruin of the area and the mass exodus of many local residents, Israel promotes the ongoing transfer of Palestinians from Hebron city center.
