Woah Woah Woah OK it so transpires that you are not just looking at the pictures but also reading the words!. Now Jazz Funk is a massive musical genre which incorporates the Roy Ayres, James Mason, Slave, Azymuth, Earth Wind and Fure to name but a few. I promise one day i will do one of those, but todays topic is Brit Funk and the Brit stands for British. Now like my recent Lovers Rock video, Brit funk was how we in the UK intepreted what was comming over the Atlantic mainly from America. You had to sound American to get air play and at the time the bans on the scene didnt get the street cred. Light of the World Beggar and Co Freeze Incognito But like a fine wine these bands were to get there moment in the sunshine years later when people truly understood the quality of the music they were making. You cannot go to a soul weekender these days without seeing at least one these artists featured but back then there was no Radio airplay, no pop videos and although many were signed to 'major' record labels, they didnt get much support or investment. Hmmmmma familiar story! These records thrived in the clubs many of the then new main stream white clubs in Kent, Surrey and Essex. The music was also played in the black clubs and the excursions of the day but there was a racial and a musical segregation back then. However as usual London provided the melting pot and many punks were into Brit Funk ( I know a few of my collection came from those sources) and places like Bali Hi in Streatham dropped many of these tunes as well. Music made for dancing it also came with its own fashion scene and a look (kung fu slippers really!) The racial element is key to the back drop, I am sure it is not until their 4th album that people got to see what Level 42 actually looked like on their album covers, but you just didnt care as they were funky and the same for Freeze, who would of course go onto have a couple of monster hits. The music in this video is often interwined with the Lovers Rock scene especially at the clubs of the time and many a record collection had Janet kay and the Funk Masters in the same record box. There will be a part 2, there were records all over the floor when i did this video which didnt get played!
