In 132 CE, Jews under the Roman empire sprang into revolt under the leader "Simon Bar Kohba" to throw off the Roman empire from Jewish lands. The Jewish revolt struck the Roman Legion garrisoned in Jerusalem, demolishing it. The revolt spread to Jericho and further to the south, resulting in the Jews holding on to a state in the south east of the region. After fighting for two years however, the revolutionaries were fought to a standstill and besieged in the fortress of Betar where they held their last stand. Jewish texts describe a massacre at Betar in which the Jews were slaughtered to a man and the roman horses waded up to their noses in blood. Roman sources suggest that over 500,000 Jews both Militant and civilian were killed over the course of the 3 years the revolt took place in. After this event, the Romans banished the Jews from Jerusalem. Some sources point to this war being the start of the Jewish Diaspora in which the Jewish people were scattered across the world after being displaced from their homeland.
