This is a video about sailing junks in California, the mostly Chinese people who sailed in them, the world they inhabited and about the replica junk built under the leadership of John Muir. The Shrimp Fisheries of Bay Area, squid fishing in Monterrey, Abalone in the Channel Islands, the Sand Diego area and Mexico. Single masted junks and Schooner junks. Although built to the Chinese style, these junks were products of Chinese Americans building in the USA, for the fisheries of the California area. Strange that later visits to the US by junks seemed so exotic, when these craft had been in California for so long. The story of these junks is a small part of the social history of the Chinese in America. A case of forgotten history perhaps. Our story includes some material from newspapers of the day, but also the Hollywood film, Blood Alley, and some references to novelist Jack London.
