The Lost Railways of Westhouses, Blackwell & New Hucknall Collieries

We're looking at disused railways around Westhouses, Blackwell and New Hucknall collieries in this video. This fed both Blackwell A Winning and B Winning Collieries. We'll also see some of the old Great Central Railway and sidings and how this contributed to the area - oh, and happy new year!!! Built in 1871 as far as both the Blackwell collieries, it was later extended to the New Hucknall Colliery and New Hucknall sidings on the Great Central. The lines closed at various stages, with the latest been the late 80s We are starting at Westhouses in Derbyshire and the site of the former Westhouses and Blackwell station. Now no longer present, but the line is still in use as the Erewash Valley line between Nottingham, Chesterfield and Sheffield. The station dates back to1881 but closed in 1967. We can stilll the old Station pub and follow the footpath alongside the tracks. We pass some old lamps on one of the accesses into the old Westhouses depot, which is now all lost to open cast mining. The depot closed in 1987. Continuing on the route of the disused railway eastwards - this is now called the Blackwell Trail, we come to the site of the Blackwell A Winning colliery. Closed in 1969. We can see information boards giving a little history onthe colliery. The line continues under the M1 motorway and into Hilcote and the site of the Blackwell B Winning Collier. Closure came in 1964 and nothing remains. There are a few more lines around here to explore and this includes the line towards the New Hucknall Colliery and another towards the New Hucknall sidings on the Great Central Mainline. We can see the point where the GCR crossed over the colliery branch as we near the site of the New Hucknall colliery site at Huthwaite. We can this follow the branch line from New Hucknall Colliery to the New Hucknall sidings, which again has been redeveloped. But as usual this doesnt stop us having a good scout around finding lost railway items. On the way home, we divert a few hundred yards up the GCR mainline to the bridge under the now A38. This was the site of the large cutting under the road that has left behind a lovely old bridge - that 1000s drive over everyday but have no idea exists. We can walk down a narrow path down the trackbed and the junction with the South Normanton Colliery. Thanks for watching, happy new year and all the best for 2023!!!
