In 1984, Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma made history as the first Indian in space. Forty-one years later, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is set to follow in his footsteps, becoming the second Indian astronaut to travel to space — this time aboard the Axiom Space Ax-4 mission to the International Space Station. Scheduled to launch on 10 June 2025 aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, Shukla’s mission is more than symbolic — it's strategic. It lays the groundwork for India’s upcoming Gaganyaan human spaceflight program, slated for 2027. Shukla, a seasoned Indian Air Force test pilot, will join a global crew including American veteran Peggy Whitson, Hungarian astronaut Tibor Kapu, and Polish spacefarer Slawosz Uznanski. Together, they will conduct more than 60 scientific experiments over 14 days — spanning biology, earth sciences, material studies, and human physiology.
