“Omitted,” a documentary film directed by Lavinya Stennet, which explores how education systems erase or distort Black history and how this omission affects identity, belonging and the fight for reparative justice. The film presents personal testimonies from individuals reflecting on the legacy of slavery and colonialism and how Black histories have been systematically excluded from mainstream narratives. Stennet, who founded The Black Curriculum, says that she initially wrote a book that publishers rejected; she turned instead to film as a more accessible and powerful medium to spark public dialogue. At the age of 23, she has become a prominent advocate for educational reform in the United Kingdom. The film has had impact beyond the United Kingdom. After screenings in Ghana, schools began hosting debates on reparations and plans have been made to introduce the curriculum to other African countries.
