Jesse Thomas - Meet Me Tonight Along the Avenue

Jesse Thomas ( The Blues Troubadour ) was sadly overlooked during the blues revival and "fell through the cracks" until very recently.Due to a stroke he could no longer play his guitar when a few hardcore blues lovers finally re-discovered his music and there were new opportunities for him to play his stellar brand of country blues. Originally from Louisiana he came to Los Angeles where he settled by way of Oklahoma City in the mid 1940's.His recording career as a blues artist went back to the late 20's.Jesse's music always had a "Deep Southern" feel whether he was playing pure country blues as he is on this track or when he was playing with a small group.He made a few recordings in 1951 for the Swing Time label with one of the all time great blues pianists, Lloyd Glenn which are some of his very best.This amazing track, which may very well be the first of the first recordings of a groove which over the years has morphed into a mainstream rock groove known as "Boogie" music.Around the same time of Jesse's recording, blues artists like John Lee Hooker and then on to Jr.Parker were making similar records. Then came Slim Harpo in '66 followed by Canned Heat, then on to Magic Sam, ZZ Top and so on. This ground breaking song was recorded in 1948 when there was a thriving blues scene in Los Angeles.In fact some of the greatest blues artists of the 40's and 50's made their homes in Los Angeles and Oakland-not just in cities like Chicago,Memphis,New Orleans and Houston, as most people today have come to somehow mistakenly believe.
