The Department of Human Services (DHS) through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program provides assistance for low-income families to become self-sufficient while receiving the benefits provided by this program: The TANF program is designed to: • Provide assistance to needy families so that children can be cared for in their own homes or in the homes of relatives. • End the dependence of needy parents on government benefits by promoting job preparation, work, and marriage; • Prevent and reduce the incidence of out-of-wedlock pregnancies. • Encourage the formation and maintenance two-parent families. Who is eligible for this program? • To qualify for this program in Pennsylvania, you must be a resident of Pennsylvania and a citizen of the United States (certain non-citizen lawfully admitted for permanent residence may be eligible). You must be unemployed have a low or very low income. • Must be pregnant or 18 years old or younger and be a head of household. • If you want cash assistance for a dependent child, you must cooperate with the paternity and child support requirements, unless you have good cause not to cooperate. Your child must be under the age of 18 or 18 and a full-time student. Your child must live with you and you must take care of her.
