“Let it thunder to the tune of ‘Greensleeves’!” This is how Shakespeare mentions Greensleeves in The Merry Wives of Windsor (published in 1602) — almost offhand, as if no explanation were needed. That casual reference tells us one thing: by Shakespeare’s time, this was already a tune everyone knew. Long before Shakespeare’s mention, Greensleeves had already taken shape in the musical life of late 16th-century England. Though often mythically attributed to Henry VIII, historians agree the tune emerged later, shaped by Italian musical influences that reached England only after his death. Its true composer remains unknown. Greensleeves tells of a spurned lover longing for “Lady Greensleeves,” with the color green historically associated with romance — and, in some interpretations, social transgression. Its emotional power lies in its simplicity: unreturned affection, quiet devotion, and a sense of yearning that feels suspended in time. Over centuries, the melody has been reshaped and reimagined, most famously as the Christmas carol What Child Is This? The idea of expressing stories through music — without words, without lyrics — has always fascinated me, and led me to create this series. My version of "Songs Without Words" brings together melodies from different cultures, eras, and traditions — from classical music to operatic arias, from popular songs to folk melodies — curated into distinct sub-collections, each exploring a different musical heritage, carefully arranged, adapted, and improvised.
