Some things like biodegradable items break down quickly, but others can take hundreds of years or more. As time goes on, this bottle starts to break down and as it does it releases harmful chemicals and microplastics into the ground. These microplastics can sneak into our environment unnoticed causing pollution and carrying toxic substances. Now imagine it's tossed carelessly into a river, beginning its journey through winds and drainages into the vast ocean. Once there, it slowly breaks down into microplastics. These microplastics are troublemakers, causing pollution and disrupting the food chain. All because they entered the ocean. Now microplastics are pollutants and carriers, found in almost all places in the world. So here's the kicker. Marine creatures might mistake these microplastics for food. So when we eat certain aquatic animals and drink water, we consume these microplastics. Even more alarming, a 2019 World Wildlife Fund study, estimates that an average person drinks 1,769 microparticles of plastic from water weekly. The study presents further evidence each of us in total is consuming 5 grams of microplastics weekly. That is equivalent to eating a credit card. Isn't that a remarkable journey? A discarded water bottle took only to end up in our bodies?
