At least 36,000 deaths were attributed to the eruption and the accompanying tsunamis. The explosion was heard over 3,000 miles away, and its effects were felt globally, with tsunamis devastating coastal communities and ash clouds altering weather patterns for years. Today, the volcano is a symbol of nature's raw power and resilience, with its active child, Anak Krakatau (Child of Krakatau), rising from the caldera (which also consists of islands Lang, Verlaten, Rakata) formed by the 1883 eruption. It is still active, and its most recent major eruption in 2018 resulted in a collapse of its volcanic shelf, leading to a tsunami that killed 426, which was the deadliest volcanic tsunami in Indonesia since the original 1883 eruption. It continues to grow at a height of 4-5m per year.
