I'm Yossr and today I'll help you with the most important vocabulary that you should use in the IELTS writing task 1, but first if you haven't watched my last video on writing task 1- how to organize your answer- please check the link below as it shows you how to answer this question. In this lesson, you will learn verbs and nouns to describe different trends and trends means the changes you find in the chart, adverbs of intensity are some words to describe how the verb happened, prepositions especially when we use numbers to describe the chart and finally describing trends on charts and this is the practice part which means that you need to watch the video till the end. And now, let's get started. Before we get into it, I want to walk you through the writing band descriptors in brief. The band descriptors are the criteria that the examiner grades you on which are task achievement, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. For today, my focus is the lexical resource which means the use of vocabulary and here the chart shows you starting from band 6, 7, 8 to 9. So, if you look here band 6 means that you use an adequate range of vocabulary. Adequate means enough for the purpose, but it's limited and you make some errors in spelling and word formation. For band 7, you use sufficient range of vocabulary. Sufficient again means enough and satisfactory for the purpose and you have less mistakes; less errors in spelling and word formation. If you target above band 7, you have to use a wide range of vocabulary like band 8 a wide range of vocabulary fluently and flexibly to convey precise meanings which means you don't use limited vocabulary. No, you use different words with the same meaning like synonyms and here you produce rare errors in spelling and word formation. For band 9, you use a wide range of vocabulary with very natural and sophisticated control of lexical features rare minor errors occur only as slips and this means use a lot of synonyms and use high standard words, advanced words and this is my focus in today's video. I'm going to help you with vocabulary in order to get above band 7 to target band 8 and above. And now, let's start our lesson the first trend which is the "upward trend". If you have a chart and the arrow is going up, so going up of course you will think about "go up". Go up is a correct verb, but it's a phrasal verb. It's not formal, here you can use formal advanced verbs and you can use also the noun form. A verb like "increased." I use the past simple because when you describe the chart use the past simple increased or you can use the noun "an increase of." "Grew" which is the past of grow or "a growth of", "rose" the past of rise or the noun "a rise of", "improved" or "an improvement of", "peaked" or "a peak of". All these verbs mean going up, so now let's see some examples. The demand for less working hours increased. or The graph shows an increase of two millions in the last quarter. The first example shows you the use of the verb while the second is the use of the noun. Sales peaked at 10 million last year. "Peaked" means reached the highest point, or sales reached a peak of 10 million last year. The number of smokers rose by 10% or The chart shows a rise of 10% in the number of smokers.
