President Richard Nixon discusses the Moorer-Radford Affair in this interview from May 13, 1983. Prior to the Nixon visit to China in 1972, China's Premier Zhou Enlai expressed concern over maintaining secrecy during the US-China summit. President Nixon explains that the reports published by journalist Jack Anderson on the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war nearly torpedoed the visit to China. How Jack Anderson received sensitive information on the India / Pakistan conflict is disturbing. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Admiral Thomas Hinman Moorer, directed Navy Yeoman First Class Charles Radford to spy on the Nixon White House. Radford, a typist, travelled with Henry Kissinger on his trips abroad and had access to sensitive files relating to national security and foreign policy. Radford, under secret orders from the Pentagon, stole and copied documents from Kissinger's briefcase and numerous other classified sources. Radford, after supplying these documents to the Pentagon, then supplied them to journalists like Jack Anderson. In this video, Nixon explains his reasoning behind covering up the Pentagon spy ring. No punishment of the military servicemen who spied on the Whitehouse occurred, as Nixon wanted to avoid embarrassing the US Military and sparking outrage against the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This clip corroborates an article published on February 8, 2026, by James Rosen in the New York Times titled Seven Pages of a Sealed Watergate File Sat Undiscovered. Until Now.
