So whilst I was quickly recording my last video, I decided to do a quick lesson for the fans of the podcast. This lick solely utilises the mixolydian mode and, to my ear, toes the line between the middle-eastern sound of the mixo and the bluesy edge. I would encourage you to learn the lick note for note as it is a good pattern to have under your fingers and, with slight note alterations, can be used to create many more interesting note flurries. To me, it also serves to demonstrate how you can take a chunk of scale notes and craft them to be something a bit more melodic than just running up and down. I would love to see some of you posting video response to this showing me how you get on with the lick too. If I get enough positive response to this, I might even show you guys the harmony licks too! As with the previous example, this guitar is tuned to Eb (a pain, I know, I'm sorry) so if you are playing along with a standard tuned guitar, raise everything up by one note on the fretboard. The original lick is on a standard tuned guitar and is centred around D mixolydian (think D major but with a flattened 7th). Comments, like and share if you want to help me grow this channel and don't forget if you want to hear me chatting about guitars on a weekly basis with some good friends, hop over to Itunes, aCast or Stitcher and subscribe to the Fret Talk Podcast.
