Canterbury Cathedral, through the year, have Organ Open Evenings where the Assistant Director of Music, Jamie Rogers, gives a short history and demonstration of this magnificent £4 million new Harrison and Harrison organ built 2020 (including some pipework from the previous Willis organ). Those, having previously registered, of any age and ability can ‘have ago’ on the organ! It is very relaxed and informal. I registered for one of these evenings and played on Friday 27th February 2026. Here I am playing Alan Ridout’s arrangement of Edward Elgar’s Nimrod from the Enigma Variations. This was recorded at the console on my iPhone. Jamie Rogers kindly registers (‘does the stops’) for me, so, you can hear us talking; as at a first play on this organ I’m not sure I could manage all 89 stops myself and play! The piece goes through many of the sounds of this great organ from the quietest to everything the organ has to offer (including Tuba’s) and then quickly fades to nothing. The organ’s pipework is high above the console on both sides of the Choir Triforium with the Swell Organ behind me and the Great directly above, so, the recording may sound a little unbalanced. Please excuse any mistakes (first play through on this organ and all that!) and I hope you enjoy the sounds of this magnificent organ.
