In a surprising move ahead of the Bagalkote by-election, the Northern Karnataka Farmer Union (Uttara Karnataka Raitha Sangha) has announced its own candidate, signaling a strong protest against both major parties. The union declared that neither the Congress nor the BJP has adequately addressed farmer issues in the region, and the new candidate Anand Jakati will contest independently to represent farmer voices. The announcement comes with a clear message: “We will hold farmer leaders accountable. We cannot rely on BJP or Congress; our problems require real solutions,” said Basavaraj Karigar, the state president of the Northern Karnataka Farmer Union. He emphasized that farmers demand fair treatment – support in terms of food, resources, and genuine assistance, rather than empty promises. The candidate nomination for Anand Jakati will take place on March 23, 2026, marking a significant political twist in the Bagalkote by-election.
