Everett Hendrixon, BVT’s Territory Manager for the Midwest and Eastern US, interviews John Bennett, owner of Alma Sunbelt Blueberries in Georgia. Below is the text transcript of Everett’s interview with John. ------------------------ Everett So my name is Everett Hendrixon and I'm here with John Bennett of Alma Sunbelt Blueberries in Alma, Georgia. In a beautiful 100 acre field. John, I thank you for your time today and taking the time to talk to us and answer some questions. The first thing we wanted to ask is, when did you start using BVT? John About 2 years ago. Everett Okay. John About 2 seasons so far. Everett And do you intend on keep using it? John Yes. Everett Otherwise, we probably wouldn't be here, would we? John Yeah. [laughter] Everett Can you tell me a little bit about the experience you've had with BVT from the start? John Well, it's one of those things that's hard to measure, but with highbush blueberries, one of the things that bombards us, especially in a year when we have excessive rain, and if you get behind on picking, you've got overripe fruit and you've got anthracnose. And we just haven't had it since we started bee vectoring. And to me, that's the reason I'll do it again. Everett I hear you. And is that the biggest help it's been to you or has it helped you in any other way? John I feel like it's helped the overall pollination, and it's helped the size of the berries. But again, that's something very hard to measure because you know, I can't, I don't have a row right next to it that the bees didn't visit. So, it's hard to measure, but I feel like we got bigger fruit from the bee vectoring, and I'm very pleased because we don't have anthracnose and that's a major, major problem. Everett Can you speak to how it's changed, if any, your spray program? John Yeah, we have a scout who is very, very good and he only does, we do some preventative sprays. And he only does a spray when he sees a need. We don't just do a every ten-day spray and we're spraying less. We're spraying less. We're still, you know, it's one of those things that if you should have sprayed, you can't go back and spray, so we are a little hesitant not to spray some, but we've certainly sprayed a lot less than we used to. Everett Well I understand. Very good. That's good to hear. As far as your experience with us, myself, and my team, do you feel like BVT has been there to make sure everything runs smoothly for you? Has the customer service side of things been strong? John Oh, absolutely, then again I don't have anything to compare it to because I haven't used anybody else's BVT system, but I've been very pleased. Ya'll been very helpful, and helping us set the hives up and get everything, check on us to make sure we're doing it right. And you know, we have to, twice a week, have to change the trays but that's not a big deal. You know on these hundred acres, it takes us about an hour and a half. Everett Oh, that's not bad. John Twice a week. Everett No, that's good. John So. Everett Good, good. good. But now, would you recommend this to others? This is the biggest question we always get, would you recommend this to other growers? John Well, I'm always hesitant to recommend anything to anybody else but I, what I do is, this is what I'm doing and I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't think it was effective. But yes, I would, as I continue, I have would put you in contact with other farmers for you to sell them to. Everett Yes. John But as far as me recommending it, this is what I do, might want to take a look at it. Everett Well very good. Again, is there anything else that you'd like to tell us about your BVT experience? John Well, it's like everything else, it costs too much. But I can't do anything about it. I think we get our money's worth. But you know, all of our costs are going up, and I don't know if it's going up next year. I have no idea. But we're gonna use BVT because I think it's money well spent. Everett Oh, very good. John Yup. Everett John, again, thank you for your time, and hey, it looks like you're going to have a beautiful crop in the next season. John Maybe so, maybe so. Everett Alright, very good.
